For a time in the Navy I was a Parachute rigger, that meant repairing chutes, thus sewing.
Most of the boys learned how to sew in time, so that they could make their own OP gear too.
Sewing is a great skill and a huge $$ saver.
I have a cheap ($200) "denim stitch" made by some anonymous off shore CO for SEARS.
A real machine would run $11-1500 for something that would sew up awnings, leather and a few layers of canvas.
If one is looking a machines for other than light fabrics stay away from those w/ programing and ones that have computers.
Basically one needs fwd, rvrs, stitch width / length, on and off, a light is nice sometimes
If momma has some nice machine that she uses often, don't mess it up by overworking it w/ heavy materials doubled up! SHE WILL and SHOULD hurt you for such things.
I suspect one would be mad if their significant other used our favorite chain saw to soften the ground fence post holes.:D
Lube often and play sew with scraps before every project, to relearn on the junk not the curtains.
