We love our 2004 S&S 8.5. We do need spacers on our 1999 Super Duty F350 to clear the cab. I made mine out of 4" x 4"s. I am not clear on the years for the changes. I purposely bought the 8.5 so I have easy access to the hitch, and no need for the extended hitch. Personal choice.
I agree they are a bit on the heavy side, and you have to look close for dry rot. I also had to repair mine. So be sure to check the front corners carefully.
