ac problems

ac cools good at night but at mid day compressor cycles of and on about every 10 minutes and don't cool very well and has started tripping main breaker every once in a while,,,, cleaned the evaporator and filter. just before compressor kicks out it sounds like its laboring. guess i have a compressor going out or do i need Freon? thanks

With a clean filter and evap. coil it should not freeze up at either fan setting when the thermostat is at a reasonable setting. Low fan will do a better job of removing humidity which is a big factor in the southern states. The lower the humidity the warmer it can be and you still feel comfortable. If you try to cool to 65 you will likely have problems reguardless of fan speed.

    Thank you.

I'm from the Midwest 30 years of RV'ing IN the Midwest.

Then I started Snowbirding to Florida. There is a WHOLE bunch of stuff you don't know and need to learn when you start taking your RV into a different region of the US where you have never been before.

And that new green mold stuff now growing all over your RV, is something you wish you NEVER knew about. :R

  • That is very interesting, and I'm thinking your guy is looking for your money. The idea is to get more air across the evaporator coils to prevent the frost. Slowing it down by running on slow can exaggerate that. A dirty filter which will also slow the air can contribute to this.
  • Interesting, my RV repair guy said that if you are in a humid hot area you should run your fan on "low", so it does NOT freeze up. He said if the Snowbirds would do just that one thing of putting the ac fan on low when they get to Florida....he'd probably go out of business! :W

After paying for that repair call because my ac 'was' freezing up and not running right AND listening to his advice I never use high fan any more and it has never froze up again. And no it is not warmer in the coach using the low fan.

Low fan, clean filter inside OFTEN, and check and clean coils regularly.

Also, Don't know where you are parked but I ran across many areas that mid day the utilities back off the power, i.e. brown outs. I'd check what's coming in during that part of the day when it starts acting up.
  • As said, check voltage inside RV while A/C tries to run. If voltage is below 110 VAC you found the problem. We carry a Hughes autoformer to correct for low voltage and end up using it at about 20% of the CG's we stay at.
  • Need to check voltage and amp draw against the name plate, if high then the winding are bad, that's if voltage is 115 to 120. Be sure shore power is getting a good connection at both ends.
  • What about power draw? Could the heat and use of the day be causing power issues in the grounds? Perhaps low voltage?
  • Sounds like it might be frosted up. Can you open up the filter housing and see frost on the fins at all? Do you run it on full fan when it's running?
