I'm thinking of getting something to replace the stock exhaust system from the DPF back. I don't want to remove any of the DPF components or do anything that would impact the emissions. I also don't want LOUD. I just want something that has a little more robust sound then the stock exhaust. Something that says 'I've got 400 HP and you don't' to all the Prius drivers.I'm looking at the Dynomax bolt-on system, PN 39509. Has anyone done this ?Other suggestions are welcome.ThanksTim

Ford spends millions of dollars developing a exhaust system that is quiet to the Grandfatherly types who approve such exhaust systems, and you want to change it to make it louder?I would keep it stock - unless something needs to be replaced. My sister changed her Expedition exhaust system to one that the kids could hear as she arrived back home. The stock system, the Dog was surprised when the Expedition pulled up. Her husband did the same stupid thing to the F-150 Ecoboost, I think it is stupid to make it loud. JMHO though, you can do what you like. Yes I do know people who would say "I want to scare off the Prius owners" and others who like it loud! Just not my thing anymore. I like it that my Edge is rated as one of the most quiet interiors of all the vehicles produced in 2007. You guys are fretting about nothing. His truck will not be louder with a dpf back exhaust. It will be for looks only.

I can't imagine being able to change the sound much with the DPF in place. Pushing exhaust through that sponge must do a lot to quiet it down doesn't it? I don't know as I've never owned a DPF equipped diesel.To the OP, I bet their are samples of the sound your will get on YouTube.

I followed the link and read the article. There was nothing there about exhaust systems. You added that on your own in your link title. It appears that the 2 companies were fined because they did not secure the necessary paperwork for the 'engine parts' that they sold in California. Shame on them.

Again, I'm looking at DPF back exhaust systems. There is no effect on any pollution equipment as all that equipment is forward of the connection point. My (truck) exhaust will still smell just like roses.

If I buy in to your argument than I would always have to use Ford parts to replace any exhaust components that rust out. Which is not true.

Are you telling me that there are no after market exhaust systems sold in California ? I think not. The manufacturers just go thru a paperwork exercise to get 'certified'.

And just for laughs, I went to the 'find a local retailer' part of the Dynomax site and typed in 'Los Angeles'. It gave me back over 500 local retailers. So I think I can safely travel thru the great state of California without worries of having my truck confiscated.

Here's an idea, to self educate yourself. Do a search under EPA or CARB and exhaust system modifications. Try using Google as a search engine, and see what comes up. Instead of looking for loopholes, try looking for enforcement of rules instead. You'll be surprised how you can educate yourself, instead of getting your hands held here.

There are plenty of aftermarket emissions legal exhaust systems out there. Look on a Powerstroke forum for real answers. Just remember, whatever you do, if you don't like it you can always put it back to stock and sell your aftermarket exhaust on CraigsList.

There are noise ordnances in most cities and is up to the code enforcement (non LEO's)
and LEO's to enforce. Typically if a neighbor complains or some such

Messing with FEDERAL mandated SMOG systems/components/equipment/etc
is a FEDERAL offense. Used to be only in states with higher SMOG
standards (AKA California)

Businesses can have fines imposed, revoke business licenses, etc.

Citizens warning first with a 'fix it ticket', then fines if repeat offenses

Key is the product's certification documentation. Right down to the imprinted
or embossed, etc logo on their product(s)

If it says "for off road use only", then it's most likely NOT certified and they
have CYA'd themselves from the Fed's

Even if you don't ever plan on selling your modified vehicle...they now have
learned HOW2 get ya...yearly registration will be denied if you have a 'fit it
ticket' against it. Only until you have it signed off by whatever state agency
(here in Calif, the highway patrol or if serious enough, a certified test facility)
signed it off

I'm with Niner...been there done that. When a teen even talked dad
into letting me build a 3 car garage out back. 10-12 foot long metal
10ga topped work bench. Overhead engine 1 ton hoist. 2 engine stands
and an big ETC That house is now mine and waiting for grandson to get
old enough to teach him HOW2

2 seater was easy to switch out engines (OEM to custom) for smog tests

Now that I'm in my mid 60's, not so pleasant or more like I don't
want to every other year or when they decide to force me to. I'm on
their list of 'high emitter' and have to have all of my vehicles smog'd
often...even though they all pass below most cars to even ZERO emissions
recorded

PS...Enjoy the fact that your diesel's are over 8.5K GVWR...in France
and soon most of Europe will ban diesel in anything less than whatever
truck GVWR they have over there.

That will migrate over here all too soon...mostly half ton or less GVWR
