In the real towing size trucks they make their own diesel engines and transmissions instead of sending a cheque away to Cummins or Allison or whoever else. By concentrating on one model (and will be even more so when Superduty starts using the aluminum cabs) they can lower their costs per unit.
So if they really wanted to sell on just "price" I bet they could undercut everyone and still make a bit per truck?
So what really defines the "best" truck, the highest sales numbers, or the one that many folks willingly pay more for than the others?
Something else to think about and stir this up a bit more eh?
At the risk of starting an argument the Duramax is 60% owned by GM and 40% by Isuzu and built in Moraine, Ohio. Duramax sales from 2001 to May 2007 reached 1,000,000. Isuzu has produced over 20,000,000 engines. Credit should be given to Ford who builds theirs in Mexico. Ford transmissions, as well as the Allison are built in the USA. IIRC, Allison has 80% of the U.S. medium and heavy duty market.
