Another camper noob question - window to truck?

My truck doesn't have a slider in the back window but it sure would be nice to leave the litter box for the beasts in the truck where it normally lives but allow access to the camper for them.

Is it worth it to replace the back window with one that has a slider? Do most people hook up their camper to the back window of the truck or not?
  • I just purchased my Ford F-350 and I plan to put in a slider window when I get my camper. Same reason as I want the litter box in the cab.
  • I traveled fulltime for 2 years with 2 cats. They needed the exercise and seemed to really like being able to move about. The opening also helps to keep a reasonable temperature in the camper when traveling in hot or cold weather. After traveling all day in the hot sun, it was a joy to open the camper and find it relatively cool due to the A/C from the truck. In addition I could pull cool air through the truck into the camper with the exhaust fan. That was a real plus when campgrounds did not have hook ups and did not allow generators.

Here's a sliding rear window for under $180 with free shipping. Are you handy with tools?
  • easy and inexpensive to replace the the rear window .i have a 2006 dodge 3500 and it cost around 250 +tax as i remember it .works really graet for the cat to go back and forth .i purchased a aftermarket window as the dodge was much more expensive.go to local glass shop, shop around the prices really varied quite a bit
  • Our cats went back and forth although we kept the cat pan in the bath/toilet area. Also having an opening is ready nice when traveling in hot or cold weather. Quite a bit of heat or A/C made it into the camper so it was not excessively cold or hot at the end of a day of travel.
  • We have a slider on our truck and a removable window on the TC. We made our own "boot" to go between the truck and TC. It's a fairly small opening, but it works well for our pets and they use it quite a bit while we're driving.

I have no idea what a replacement window would cost for your truck. It might be something you could find in a junk yard if not aftermarket.
  • I would do it. Don't want to sleep with the litter box, right? However, I would keep the windows closed on the road and only open up the windows and insert the passthru while stopped. I wouldn't want to mess with a road-worthy donut.
  • We had a slider window in our truck and the cat travelled back and forth.

We had a donut made of closed cell foam that was form fitted and made a nice snug fit between the two. We only had a problem once with it moving and that was while driving in gale force winds and the winds were hitting us directly on the side.

It would not be cheap to make these modifications. We ordered our truck with the slider window and our Lance came with same. I think the donut also came from Lance.
  • Depends on how bad toy want the pass thru and do you want to spend the money. Then a way to seal it between the two. We had one years ago when kids still rode in the camper had truck had no back seat, all the way from Oklahoma to Oregon and back. Had a time keeping the doughnut in place and inflated. Personal choice nowadays. Me, not.
