Huh? A 12 valve? Not to my ears. I only test drove the 1989 and 1991 models, but had daily experience listening to the he 95 and 96 12 valves. All of the 12 valves between 1989 through 1996/97 were deafeningly loud compared to any 7.3L from 94 through 03.
As pointed out in the posts above, some guys just like the sound of the Cummins 12 valves so much better, it is music to their ears, and as such seems quieter. Like a symphony of mechanical brute force. But go try and idle one at 1 am for 2 or 3 minutes in a campground, and watch the how the day night shades wrinkle with disgruntled people peeking at the disturbance. It will take 5 or 6 minutes of idling to cause the same stir with a 7.3L.
Today's diesels, on the other hand, could idle all night and no one would hear, or smell them.
