It was tight but I was able to tow my trailer without an extension for a couple of years, with a 9'6" camper.
If I'd had known about the Brophy BZ20 or BH20 shanks, which are several inches longer than a normal shank, I probably wouldn't have my current extension setup.
There's nothing special about my trailer, just a standard tandem axle 7x14 enclosed utility trailer. No extended tongue or anything like that.
This is just to demonstrate that it an extension is not always necessary if your camper happens to hang over the back of the truck.
