I hunted long and hard for my 851 for exactly that reason. Seems just about perfect to me. I can tow directly off the hitch with my Air-Safe hitch (I pull a ~9000 lb trailer with a fairground organ in it), but still have the elbow room that the slide provides. It's an extraordinarily nice combination, especially with the big tanks since 90% of the time I'm boondocking. Unfortunately they only made it for two years about 10 years ago, so they aren't easy to find, especially on the east coast. It is a heavy camper, you'll really want a dually truck for it. Between camper and trailer I'm right at all the upper weight limits for my F350. A few more pounds and I'd need a CDL. The rig is also tall, about 12'6", which frequently causes headaches.
I really just don't "get" short bed trucks. I can only imagine they are bought by people who don't really need a truck when they aren't camping. Even with an 8 ft bed I routinely have lumber and other stuff hanging way too far off the back end. I don't understand how they have come to dominate the market.
