Anyone tow with a Lance 850?

Just bought one.

I had towed a trailer with my 1010 (10' 1"). Used a 2' extension.

Had some issues.

850 is 8' 11". 14" shorter. It also has no bumper, making it close to 2' shorter overall.

The jacks, which is where I hit trailer with 1010 radically jacknifed (operator error), don't relate to bumper, but to floor length, though.

So I'm thinking I still need ~1' extension. I suspect the bending/cracking I experienced with the 2' extension will disappear with 1', but I'd love to eliminate extension entirely.

Anyone with experience? Thoughts?

Thanks.

Joe

  • I need a 6" drop, but you made me realize I don't need a 2-piece hitch insert, area13.

Thanks. I'm going to have my local welder (really good, and as I repeatedly tell him regarding ranch stuff, way too cheap) combine my extension and 6" drop hitch into one solid 12" extended hitch.

Bonus is I'll have solid 2" stock rather than tubing. I don't trust tubing for a hitch.

I hate unnecessary weight, but that's 10# I'll happily carry.

Good thoughts, kd4upl (where do you guys get these handles?)

I'm guessing I was towing ~3500#. Not sure, though.

This was just a fabbed-up extension.

It started out with heavy-wall 2", but when that cracked I had it rebuilt with solid 2".

Bent that off road. I don't drive fast.

Hitch under truck was stock 99 Dodge. Cracked it and had it rebuilt with gussets where appropriate. That hitch was recalled by Dodge, and I took advantage, but the new one cracked.

    It held up after rebuild.

24" is a whole lot of lever, I reckon.

I like the look of the hitch on the 2012 a lot better; someone smart is in charge of Ram right now, it appears to me.

I have a 2-1/2" receiver and use about a 2' extension (I cut a 34" extension down)for light loads of ATV's and snowmobiles. With a heavy load a Superhitch is the only way to go.

  • Folks on here have extended the tongue of their trailer. Have to watch out for going through dips where the trailer tongue catches the underside of the camper.
  • How much weight were you towing when you had "bending and cracking"? Were you over the weight limits of the extension? I regularly tow nearly 4,500 pounds with a 48" extension and have never had any problems like you describe.
The sure way to answer the question is to hook the combo up and have someone watch for contact while you back up and turn. It may be fine with no extension, it may not. You may consider a longer ball mount instead of an extension if it's really close.
