B&W is supposed to be top of line , yet people drop their fifth wheels with them.
Say it ain't so! - portablevcbExplorerI also who bought one for my hitch. Never felt the hitch would fail, but, someday I might. I like checklists and procedures and like to do the same thing every time. Check chocks, line up pin, make sure handle is 'in', back up until the 'clunk'. Get out and check the handle and jaws, lock the handle. Raise jacks about an inch, do a pull test. Raise the LG. Pull the rear chocks, back up a bit and pull the front chocks. Go.
The day came about a year after I got it. Hitched up, raised jacks and did the pull test. Pulled and out it came. Yep, I did several things wrong that day.
Since then I've never needed it :) Still glad I have it.
Just last week saw a truck with the classic dent in the tailgate. Yesterday on the road saw another. Both were towing at the time I saw them. - cummins2014Explorer

Nope, never had one, never had the need for one. A good hitch will keep you from dropping the trailer. I'll spend the money on fuel. :)

B&W is supposed to be top of line , yet people drop their fifth wheels with them. That doesn't say much for the good hitch theory. I believe you meant to say good hitch procedures keep from dropping the trailer.
You keep spending your money on fuel, and keep up those good hitching procedures, and no you most likely will never need a bedsaver . :) - dodge_guyExplorer III've seen the bed saver before. I like the idea. I can't believe the 5th wheel hitch manufacturers don't have them built in as standard. I guess it would make them seem like they weren't a good hitch. I like the idea of the bed saver. Seems like it is the equivalent of safety chains for a ball hitch trailer!

You folks made my paranoia go past the red line. A few years back i installed a Butch's Services bed saver on my Reese. :R
The problem with Butch's is its not automatic, likely to forget to latch it right along with the hitch.
When I get to that state and i am still attempting to hitch a 5th wheel, somebody please put me out of my mystery and have me committed. :S - fj12ryderExplorer III

Honestly, if you don't feel comfortable or safe with that hitch, get a new one. That one may have been free, but if you don't like it dump it.
As I said I wasn't so concerned with hiking up and it dropping but more of travel.
I'm not fond of the jaws that are on my new hitch. Granted it's not the one i asked for when we ordered new trailer and it was given to me for nothing and it's brand new.
I don't like how they lock in the middle of the pin instead of around the pin or like the flat bad completely straight across. To me looks like a lot of pressure on that joint and seems unnecessary.
So my reason for the bedsaver comes from that view. - rhagfoExplorer III

I don't understand your statmet about wrapping around the middle of the pin, instead of around the pin.
The Resse design means the more pulling pressure the tighter they shut. This is why some time and if the TV is putting forward pressure on the pin, they are being forced shut. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

If thats the case this is what you need, 1" thick machined jaws to snugly fit around the kingpin.

If your paranoid enough to be considering a bed saver you are likely careful enough that you don't need one.
There are several reasons a 5th wheel trailer can drop on a trucks bed other than being careless or paranoid during the hitching/unhitching process.
Operators error during hookup as most rv folks think.....is just one of them.
The Bedsaver or other pin catch safety devices go a long way in eliminating all those reasons.

The Bedsaver topic is always a hot topic. It seems to bring out rude remarks...brand bashing from some folks.

"I think all that is pertinent has probably been said...if you want a device to prevent an accidental mishap to your truck bed, there a numerous devices out there and several different engineering methods to achieve that goal, or as one poster has done, build one of your own design. If you feel the need or simply want such a device as "insurance" or "peace of mind", pick one. If you don't feel the need for such a device or don't want the added complexity and cost, no one is going to think badly of you for your decision."
IMO very wise statement. - 4x4ordExplorer IIIIf your paranoid enough to be considering a bed saver you are likely careful enough that you don't need one.
