Arctic Fox 1150 on F350 DRW diesel?

We are new to truck camping and have not yet purchased a truck or a camper. We've done a lot of reading and ideally would like to purchase an Arctic Fox 1150. The truck we are interested in is a 2013 Ford F350 4x4 Crew Cab Long Bed Diesel DRW. Based on the weights published on the Ford site, it looks like we would be able to carry the 1150 and be within the 14,000 GVWR limit. However when we test drove a truck, the camper certification in the glove box said the limit was 4460 lbs, which means the 1150 would be over the limit once it is loaded for camping. It looks like the AF 990 might be pushing the limits as well. I'd like to hear from others that are carrying an 1150 on a comparable truck - have you weighed your rig when loaded? Is it under the 14,000 GVWR limit? How does it handle? Did you need any modifications (airbags, stable loads, etc)?

Thanks,

  • My TC and truck, plus my upgrades to the truck, are in my signature. The 1140 is sister to the 1150 in fact its a little heavier. No problems at all. Solid as a rock. Did you consider the 1140 at all? Tons of kitchen storage that the 1150 does not have, 8 cu ft frig compared to a 6 cu ft in the 1150, and a large outside storage bay that again the 1150 does not have. The 1140 also has a coat closet behind the dinette seat that most are not aware of since they never show it in the brochures or videos. Its not immense, but its OK to hang coats and store the pet stuff. The 1150 does give you a nice size wardrobe, so to make up for that we optioned the full wall wardrobe in the cabover. Both are great TCs no matter which way you go.
  • I run a 2001 F350 to haul my 2010 Fox 1140 with the following mod's = Stableloads, Air Bags (set at 35 lbs when loaded), KYB shocks, 8 ply tires and stock sway bar -- the truck handles better than my HR 33ft Class A on an F53 frame (even after all the mods I made to the HR)-- no problems with braking, curves, hills --- it is a pleasure to haul --- the only weight control I focus on is traveling with 10 gallons of water and 2 gallons in black tank , dry grey, tow nothing --- did 7500 miles last fall and will do the same this spring. Happy trials

    DITTO.

A friend said he followed the "air bag frenzy" and wished he'd have started with the Torklift Stableloads.
  • I've seen a couple loaded 2013 F-450 pickups on eBay with payload stickers stating 5200lbs. The 350 will weigh something like 200lbs less but have the same GVWR. Removing the tailgate will get you close to 5500lbs of payload. I say go for the 1150 unless you plan to tow. I'd start with no mods to the truck, then try stable loads if necessary. Bags are the spendiest so try those last.
  • The glove box stickers always have confused many owners too, unsure why the weights are low on the sticker.
  • I'd guess your truck will weigh 9000, loaded (mine weighs 8500). That would leave you 5000 for the Fox
  • I looked up your 2013 spec. The camper cert always has a derate from the published, but max 6680 vs camper cert of 4460 seems odd.

For 2010 F450 (14500 GVWR), max payload was 5830, and camper cert was around 4550 as a contrast. Seems like I would have expected your cert to be pushing 5000.

Actual practice: Truck hauls like a beast.
