I don't think you'll ever see the heavy haulers go gas. The general operating principals of gas engines simply don't suggest the gap in low end tourqe will vastly decrease anytime soon.
Admittedly the gas engines of today are putting down the "stock" diesel numbers of 15 years ago.
Now if we are talking transmissions an 8 or 10 speed automatic in a medium duty 1 or 1.5 ton pickup gasser I think you can get gas to work for the heavy RV hauler. Gearing and tourqe multiplication can get the gas closed.
