- SoundGuyExplorerFWIW, should you decide that mounting your genset over the trailer tongue rather than aft of the axle is preferable but aren't interested in fabricating such a mount yourself Stromberg Carlson offers a bolt on mount Model CC-255 rated to carry up to 300 lbs ... a little Google searching shows it can be purchased for ~ $220 US.
- Sandia_ManExplorer IIWithout knowledge of TT or generator you speak of it is difficult to give suggestions, but I have seen some TTs with generators mounted on a rack on the rear of the rig and even some where they have enough room on the tongue for a small generator.
I think most TT owners either use their truck beds or TT exterior storage compartments to carry their generators. It boils down to what type of generator you plan to carry that delivers the 3-4KW you stated. Inverter generators are much lighter and easier to stow than their non-inverter counterparts.
Fuel is another issue when bringing along a generator, and if you need to feed your TT 3-4KW for extended periods you will be going through a lot of gas. A generator and the gas to feed it is a lot of weight to be placed on tongue or rear of any TT unless they are modified to handle it. Hope you have a great time on your trip out west!!! - Dakota98ExplorerMost common method, as attached to a TT, is the rear bumper.
Although this method typically requires reinforcement of the rear bumper. Also, most folks will incorporate the use of a 2" hitch receiver tube in their construction so that the generator mounting assembly can be removed easily.
You may want to include THIS in your plans, if you decide to go that route.

On EDIT: Another thought, I like the idea for transporting but don't want the genertor on either the tongue or rear bumper when in use. I prefer to remove it & place it some distance from the RV. - SoundGuyExplorerI have a small, compact Honda EU2000i so it travels in the back of my Chevy Avalanche where I also run it when needed. JMO, I'd not want to add additional weight aft of the axle on any trailer as that will only serve to unload the tongue, perhaps excessively ... instead, if I was absolutely determined to mount the genset on the trailer I'd fabricate a frame which would allow mounting the genset over the trailer's A frame, where if anything it would increase gross tongue weight rather than reduce it. Go to Google Images and search for "mounting generator on trailer tongue" and you'll see all sorts of examples.
- hppytrlsExplorerOk, thanks for the info.
- SWDExplorerAnd an 18v cutoff saw will chop through them all. Leave it in your truck...
- the_bear_IIExplorerMost often the generator is kept in the back of the tow vehicle and set next to the TT when in use. Always secure it with a heavy lock and chain or cable.
I've seen the TT rear bumper extended and the generator mounted inside of a steel mesh cage. OR a receiver hitch on the back of the TT with the generator mounted to square tubing and a mounting plate slid into the receive and locked in place.
Whatever you do make sure it is well secured, don't skimp and go with cheap locks, cables or chains use big heavy stuff. Generators are one of the most common items stolen from RVers.
