This is a hot topic over on the Ford forums. The perceived problem is with the crankcase ventilation system that carries crankcase oil fumes into the intake manifold. This oil tends to get deposited on the back of the intake valve and builds up over time. When the fuel injectors were in the intake manifold, the gasoline would tend to wash the oil/carbon build up off of the intake valves. Now that engines are using direct fuel injection into the cylinder this washing action no longer takes place. While you can see this buildup when you tear an engine down it is unclear at this point how much, if any, effect it has on the engine operation. The OC types are putting oil catch cans in the PCV line to remove most of the oil before it can reach the intake manifold.
