The issue is Bryan there is no fuel wash over the intake valves. No fuel wash = no cleaning. When you have a dry fuel like gasoline and just a little reversion on the intake valve you have the problem the EB see's.
I was told Toyota has two injectors to solve the problem. True or not, I have no idea.
If I owned an EB I would play with water injection to clean things up.
That applies to most direct injection motors, gas and diesel. You are right about Toyotas using two injectors, however the real reason is because their primary injectors couldn't delivery enough fuel volume, so the intake injectors only fire under heavy throttle.
Water injection might work on the EcoBoost and other NA DI motors. Not a good idea on diesels with variable vane turbos though, because it causes instant rusting and they get stuck.
Cummins had problems with the first year of the 6.7L motor, and had to develop a special cleaning solution that would not light off in the turbo. I imagine it will only be a matter of time before Ford approves a similar solution.
Also, induction cleaners can cause problems on other motors too. Sometime if too much solvent is delivered, it cools down the valve seats enough that they can drop into the motor :E Rare, but it happens. Usually with DIY products like sea foam because those application methods are more likely to deliver too much solvent.
