Awning Motor

My electric awning will not retract - motor just makes a clicking noise. Tried to roll in manually, no go. Just replaced the fabric & now this! Do I need a new motor & where do you buy one? Please don’t say CW.
Thanks in advance for help.

  • I recently had to change the motor on my awning. I found a replacement on eBay that worked well and installed in about 5 minutes. Your mileage may vary depending on brand of awning.
  • I had an issue a few years ago where the shaft of the motor was spinning inside the metal cap on the end of the awning. On mine there were two flat sides on the shaft and two corresponding flat spots on the cap. The problem is that there was looseness between the two. Every time you engaged the motor it took another bite out of the cap until it rounded out the hole. Now here is the fun part, you can't buy the $2 cap. They only sell it with a new motor. The cheap and simple fix is to drill a hole through the cap and the shaft and insert a spring pin through the hole.

Sounds like low 12 V voltage to me too. How old are your batteries? Have you checked the water levels? I would start there.
  • I had that issue and I replaced the motor, mine had a locking clutch in it that had to retract before the motor could turn. Check how much voltage is getting to the motor, I had low voltage. Over the eff last year I have replaced the battery and the converter! No more isdues.
  • If it worked good before fabric replacement, that may be the problem. If an arm is binding, or something misaligned from the prior fabric service, it does not take much to stop these awning motors.

  • Did it ever work after replacing the fabric? I just replaced my fabric this AM and it is working better than before as the fabric alignment as originally installed was a bit out of alignment. Does your motor not run when connecting a battery directly to the motor? Google "Dometic power awning motor" for a selection of suppliers. Looks like around $300 if you have to replace the motor.
