Awning Mounting

My daughter has a K-Z Escape trailer and recently they came back from a week-end camping and the rear lower mounting bracket that holds the awning assy. against the trailer came out. There are two screw that hold the assy. to the trailer and the awning arm goes into that. I am under the impression that the screws go into the frame. Any idea on how to repair this. I have not checked it, but I would think that the screw, which I have either worked there way out or pulled out and enlarged the holes in the frame. The ends of the screw were rusty also, so I would also think the gasket around the bracket failed and might have allowed some water to weaken it. No apparant damage to the trailer skin.

  • It appears that there is wood board behind the fiberglass coating. One can see that this was pulled out because of screw failure as the fiberglass is splintered slightly outward. I purchased some fiberglass resin that I will be filling the hole with and tap the exterior flat again. After the fiberglass dries I will drill a small pilot hole and using Lexel as a gasket and around the fitting make it water tight. I might use lock tight on the tread if it is compatible with the resin. I tried to get a slightly larger diameter screw, but the plate won't accommodate it. I will wait until after this stormy weather passes. For now I have the holes covered with Gorilla Tape to keep them waterproof. Will advise how things work out.
The unit is not under warranty. Thanks for all your assistance.
  • You should also state the construction method as in stick & tin or fiberglass siding. The Escape may all be fiberglass and there is no framing to speak of, just aluminum tubing at corners and major openings. KZ uses thin sheet metal under the outside layer of the siding on fiberglass models for awning attachment.
  • When something similar happened to my rig I filled the open holes with epoxy - went down to hardware store and purchased some gasket material. I cut the gasket to size and reattached the fitting using the original screws. Still holding strong.

It would be helpful if you'd identify just which model & year of Escape this is, whether it still may be under warranty, whether it's a power or manual awning, and whether the frame into which the mounting brackets are secured is metal or wood.
