backup camera

Hello All,

Last trip coming home had a left boat trailer tire come apart.
Did not know this until someone pulled up beside us waving.
I would like to know how far i drove on the rim at 65mph.

I have a 2005 Bigfoot.
Can anyone give me some advice on buying a backup camera and the best way to mount it.

Thanks
  • Does anyone know if there is a camera that plugs into the OEM harnesses or is it still wire your own?
  • I needed a way to monitor my kayak trailer while towing it. Sounds similar to your needs.

I mounted my Swift Hitch camera on the roof ladder and wired its power cord into my porch light. When I am towing the kayak trailer, I turn on the porch light switch and the camera is powered from the 12V camper system instead of its internal battery. The camera is adjusted so it sees the trailer and not headlights from vehicles behind me.

This setup works great for me. Maybe it will for you too.

  • I've been using a license plate camera for almost four years (purchased for $17) and have been very happy with it. One of the benefits is that if I unload the camper during a trip, I can move the camera to the truck along with the license plate.

My wireless Garmin BC30 works great, can't comment on others. It could be because the transmitter is separate from the camera itself and I mounted the transmitter on the front wall of the camper.

It only works with the Nuvicam, which combines a GPS, a dash cam and a backup cam into 1 unit.

If you have a factory cam i'd probably try to integrate with it.

Have this system too, works great, will come on when shifting into reverse or you can have it on all the time
  • I have been using a set of tadibrothers wireless cameras for a few weeks now with no complaints. I have one on theback of the TC and one inside the horse trailer. I can toggle back and forth between the two on a single monitor

  • installed a complete unit from amazon. 64.00 on 5th wheel wired all the way to front. works great

  • knowing what ruck you have could help.

That aside, you need to place it where you can see the axles, which means a license plate or above will be of little help. I put one in the hitch frame above the receiver which let me see the fiver wheels but only the hitch ball with a trailer attached.

To see your axles it will likely need to be below the receiver on the hitch which means you will want it to be waterproof.
  • I can give you the advice to NOT buy a wireless one, have not seen one that works worth a darn.
I ended up with a super cheap $15 license plate mount camera off amazon, has been working for a little over a year now so far, though I have it only powered on reverse, it shouldn't be hard to power it with a switch so you can select when you want it on, or perhaps power it on with your running lights, lots of possibilities. I would buy a separate long video cable for it too, most of them include cables that are a bit too short for most trucks, I think most have smaller cars in mind.
I view mine on my aftermarket radio, but you can easily use a separate cheap $15 LCD monitor to view it too.
