Battery security and shutoff

New trailer, new batteries. I have 2- 6 volts in series. Any suggestion on the switch type an how to wire the switch in to work. Suggestion on securing batteries without taking home while in storage.
  • Switch

I have fabricated locking metal brackets to go around the plastic battery boxes. You may be able to just use plastic coated chain and a padlock. With the cordless cutoff tools available now, nothing is really safe.
  • Probably a lot of work, but the previous owner of my unit built a welded metal box with hasp and lock lid. You can't see if the box holds batteries or not, but again I suppose if they really wanted to cut off the beefy lock they could. So far with my trailer stored in a vacant lot (houses nearby) the batteries remain!
  • Put the switch in the positive line and connect the breakaway switch to the battery prior to the disconnect. By doing that the breakaway system will work regardless of the switch position.
  • I suspect that 2-6 volt batteries are less likely to be stolen than 12 volt batteries. Still, anything you can do to make YOUR batteries harder to steal than those of the next guy is all you need to do. As someone wiser than I pointed out once, thieves tend to be lazy and will go for the easiest mark. Don't be that easy mark.

Here's what I made out of a 3/16 x 1 inch steel bar, a couple padlocks, and a couple old holding tank drain valve bolts. I didn't wanna pay over $30 for one of those commercially available battery locks. Yes, someone could cut through my steel bar in just a few minutes with a hacksaw. But a thief will go for the easiest target. There's no sense standing in plain sight, hacksawing on a trailer, just to steal a Walmart battery. Or making a lot of noise with a power cutoff tool.
  • Here is my battery box for two 6V batteries. It's a very thick plastic box from Century Plastics. link to site here

The two 6V batteries just fit in this model of box. I welded a hold down top for it and there are the puck style locks on either end. You can see one of them. It would be extremely difficult to steal these batteries.

I bought this product and had to drill out the hole for my huge locks, but I really like them. I remove my batteries between every trip to put them in my shed on battery tenders.
