I installed the DIY HercuLiner and use a 3/8" bed mat- this works perfect for me. The HercuLiner is more of a "bed paint" with rubber grit type stuff in the mix that creates friction for the rubber mat.
I only haul the TC and an occasion run to the home center when doing a weekend project... if I were tossing stuff in the bed much like a contractor would do, then a professional installed liner is more suitable.
I have Herculiner in the bed and on the bed rails of a restored 1978 Ford pickup. Compared to the Rhino which is applied in a thick layer it is just a paint but with the little rubber particles in it ain't nothing sliding on it. It's too rough for bare knees even. It will fade grayish out in the sun UNLESS you topcoat it with their UV protectant. Mine was applied 10 years ago looks great and it is still shiny black, looks wet. Great stuff for what it is...
