Best campgrounds in or around Redwoods NP?

We are thinking of traveling to northern California. More specifically the Redwood NP area. The trip will take place at the end of August. My question is two fold. First what are the best campgrounds, in or outside the park? Second things to do and see in the area?

I will be also searching for activities online. Thank you for your input. Scott
  • We are used to dry camping. We intend to spend 6 to 7 days in the area. We actually prefer state and NP. Although we have ventured into private campgrounds as needed.

The lighthouse would be a very fun and interesting trip. Adding it to the to-do list
  • If you want or need to plug in, try Klamath River RV Park. Beautiful site, nice walk to the ocean, great group camp fire! Also Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City!!
  • My wife goes back to work at the end of August. Although I would love to go in September or October it would be less than convenient.

Anutami, Gold Bluff is tent only. Will they allow truck campers? Have you stayed in your truck camper there with no problem before?

Profdant139, I will look into Prairie creek and Kamp Klamath now. It seems we may end up in a private campground if we want to make there this year.

Thank you everyone, keep the suggestions coming.
  • Prairie Creek -- lots of amazing hikes. Great campground, if you can get a place. If you want hookups, we like Kamp Klamath -- sort of funky -- not fancy -- well located. Really good live music and bbq on Saturday nights. Bring a sweater -- the evenings are chilly.

If you can delay till after school stats in Sept I would bet things would open up. Or if you like to boondock, there is LOTS of national and state forest.
  • Ancient Redwoods is a really nice campground, with a truck camper you should fit into some of the sites at Jedidiah Smith State Park, just be receptive to the site sizes for parking your unit.
Enjoy the Redwoods they are amazing.
  • Thank You for your response. It is a little late in the year to plan such a trip. The NP campgrounds are all full, as expected. I will call the campground you listed to find out what there availability is.
    Thank You Again
  • For our first stop we stayed at the KOA in Crescent City CA. Be sure to take the Howland Hill Road scenic drive. Dirt road but well packed and lots of cars there especially on the weekends. Here's the link. Scroll down.

For the second stop we stayed at Ancient Redwoods RV Park in Redcrest CA. It's right in the middle of the Redwoods but off to the side so it's easy to get into and out of. Long level pull through paved sites. Very nice owners with gift shop on site. http://ancientredwoods.net/
