Best Gas Truck 4 Pulling

Hello first time posting. I'm excited I just bought our first TT and excited to do some camping. My wife and I bought a 2011 Heartland North Trail 28' bunk house and pick it up on Wednesday. At the moment I have a 2004 Silverado with over load springs and 3.73 gears. Problem is the truck only has 4.8v8. Next spring I got the okay to get a bigger truck so I'm trying to research what to get. I been thinking a 2500 gasser but was told the Toyota Tundra would out pull the 2500 gas motors. Not looking to win any races just looking for longevity and something that doesn't rust out quickly.
  • The Tundra is a great tow vehicle if you can manage to stay under the low payload ratings. The engine has tons of power but won't necessarily out pull the 2500s. It has more output than the old GM 6.0 and is comparable to the Ram 5.7l Hemi but is losing out to the newer and more powerful 6.4 hemi and even the Ford ecoboost.

I pulled the TT in my sig with an '07 Tundra and it pulled (power wise) just as well, if not slightly better, than my current Ram 2500 with the 5.7. I chalk that up to the Tundra being 1k pounds lighter and the 4.30 gears vs 4.10s in the Ram.

The big difference is in the suspension. The Ram is stiffer and handles the weight better. I'm no longer overloaded.

That being said, if the new Tundra had 500lbs more payload I would trade back for one in a heartbeat. The quality and reliability of this Ram is highly disappointing.
  • Thanks for replies, again we are really excited to start camping. For the new truck our budget will be $20k or so and as much as I'd like a diesel I just feel that I'd have to drive it till the wheels fall off to make up the difference. Along with I wouldn't know how to work on one as well as I do a gas truck.

The truck I have now has rusted out pretty bad and is another reason I would like something nicer.
  • Fuel mileage aside, the GM 2500HD pickups with the gas v-8 have plenty of capacity for towing your travel trailer and the one you will buy in three years. The Tundra may pull as much, but I doubt that it will haul much more than half the 3,400 pounds of my 2500HD. I agree that the 4.8 v-8 is a great little motor, but not for towing.
  • I have a 2015 F250 with the 6.2 gasser, 10000lb GVW and trailer package. I tow my 2014 Canyon Cat with a GVW of 7700lbs. Took it into the Catskills, Pocono Mountains and down the NJ shore. No issues at all. It really doesn't even feel like it is back there. Now, my wallet knows it is back there. 6 speed trans really climbs the gears when going up a hill. Great truck and I have the Reese load hitch with sway control. Good luck and congrats. Never been a diesel fan or a Tundra fan.
  • Pulling power is only one measure of the TV's suitability. You also have to have cargo capacity. How much weight is the TV designed to haul.

Beefing up the suspension may improve the ride and level out the TV but it does not change the max cargo it can haul.

Basically you have to know if the tongue weight, passenger weight, camping stuff in the truck bed weight, with the WD hitch connected exceeds the allowable TV cargo capacity or axle weight limit.
  • Congrats! I wish you best of luck camping! I don't have a ton experience pulling. Pulled a 30' with a suburban. I'll say motor is only part of equation. Braking and handling are important as well. I've read half ton trucks pull much better now but my suburban didn't do that well. I would say if you can buy a bigger truck now maybe you should. Besides you might upgrade to a fifth wheel some day.
  • You'll get lots of opinions from this post!:E

I've never owned one of the Big 3, but I can say the Tundra is a solid 1/2 ton and has the durability you're looking for in a gasser. As with any TV, you'll need to look at the payload capacity closely and compare it to the hitch weight of your TT. You'll likely bump up against that before you run out of towing capacity.

Tows my 21 footer like a dream.
