Best OEM seats for longhaul comfort

My wife and I are planning on full timing in the comming years; only problem is she has several health issues and both of us have back problems. Our current rig is not very comfy; an 08 Ram 3500 Laramie Quad. The stock leather is not that great, but the stock padding is worse (even after augemting it with better foam). Plus, she can't get a comfortable position when riding. I'm not getting rid of it, as it's been a good truck, but we will be getting something more comfortable.

I'm not brand loyal. My family has been diehard Mopar for decades, and this is the 3rd Dodge truck I've owned; however, I've also owned a 1500 Chevy and a 2000 Super Duty (also some stock in Ford). At the last campsite I noticed Ford rules, followed by GM, with Dodge/Ram a distant 3rd. Anything to that?

Which have the best seats? We're pulling the fiver listed in my profile, which (when modified to fit our needs) may weigh north of 6 tons; truck will be a dually.

  • You're going about this in a roundabout way. You love the truck, but you want better seats. So keep the truck and put better, more comfortable seats in it!

Some research shows that bad posture when seated is the primary cause of back pain. Modifying the seat could alleviate this.

Googling your home zip code I find 50 automotive re-upholstery shops.Use of materials such as Memory foam, gel foams, dual density foam, air foam, adjustable air, zero gravity etc.

A good upholstery shop specializing in these things can build you a custom seat cushion for your truck seat. Maybe with the help of a Chiropractor or spine specialist. Cheaper than buying a new truck! ;)

    Good luck!

DH swears by the captain's chairs we have in our Ford. I find them excruciating after about two hours and greatly prefer the bucket seats in my sports car. He needs lower back support, I need better leg support.

One thing I know that helps, regardless of the seat itself: 7 way adjustable seats. He needs a lot of lumbar support with a level bottom, I need to be slightly reclining with the hips lower than the knees. Being able to make these changes easily makes a huge difference.
  • I have liked the Ford seats in all the Fords I drive and owned (except the 03 Sport Trac). I even pulled the Ford seats out and put them in the Dodge Van when the company bought me a new Dodge van several years ago. I still have those Ford seats (I pulled them out of the Dodge and kept them). Now I have to get my 65 K20 back in driving condition.

You really need to find what works for YOU. The difficult part is that you can't tell if a seat is going to work for you on long hauls in a 5-minute test drive. They sure aren't going to let you take a truck on a cross-country trip just to check the seat fitment.
  • Coming from a 2011 GMC Denali HD to my 2013 Ram 3500 Laramie, I can say the seats in my 2013 Ram are way more comfortable for me.

Everyone has different likes, so I would say spend some "seat time" in all potential vehicles to see what is most comfortable for you.
