Best WD and anti-sway hitch?

I am going to purchase a TV and TT soon, and would like opinions as to the best and easiest to use hitch for a novice like me. I am a newbe and would like the least troublesome unit. Money will be no object here because I believe ease of use and safety is most important.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

  • The "Best" can run all the way from none at all up to three thousand dollar units. Personally, I like the first option and chose a pickup designed to tow a much larger trailer than mine. My 2500HD is rated to tow twice the 7,000 pounds that my trailer weighs without a WD hitch. My tongue weight is about one third of my payload rating of 3,040 pounds. I do use an Andersen hitch because my girlfriend appreciates the way it eliminates porpoising and it is very easy to install.
  • We had an Equalizer on our '07 ROO HTT and it did a fine job....noisy, but did its job. When we made the change to our TT a few weeks ago, the dealer recommended the Blue OX Sway Pro 1000. DH was not familiar with it, but watched the videos on their website and liked what he saw. Grease fittings as opposed to grease smearing, very easy to adjust, easy to hitch/unhitch and quiet. There was less than $50 price difference with the Eq being the more expensive. He opted for the Blue Ox and is happy, happy, happy with it.
  • There is NO perfect system. Even the 3000.00 systems have drawbacks.

For a complete newbie I would recommend the most used system out there.
The standard friction bar and standard WD hitch, sold under many brands.
These are the original sway control designs and though not perfect, are pretty hard to screw up so badly that you won't get any benefit from it....Later as you gain more experience with setups you may find that one of the other designs are more to your liking.... The drawback with them is that setup is more critical as they combine the two functions (WD and sway control) so if the setup is bad, it is really bad.

Money wise, you can sell whatever you start with pretty easy, so the loss will be minimal.
  • Best and easiest to use may not be one in the same.

I have not used them but by all accounts the Hensley and Propride are considered the best at eliminating sway. Not sure if they are the easiest to use have read some accounts that would lead me to believe that they may not be. They also come with a very steep price tag.

The Anderson is another one I have not used. It is a newer and completely different design. Reviews are somewhat mixed from what I have seen. Very good for smaller, lighter trailers. Longer and heavier trailers are where the reviews become a little more mixed.

Equalizer is very popular and gets consistantly good reviews. Seems to be fairly easy to use. Noise is a complaint by some users.

Reese dual cam is another that receives good reviews. Setting it up initially might be a little more difficult but after that it ease of use seems to be pretty good.

The standard weight distribution with friction sway control is in my opinion no more difficult than any to use. If sized properly for the application it works well.

The one that has not been mentioned yet is the Blue Ox Sway Pro. Again I have no experience with it however I think I would put it on my short list. From what I have seen it is easy to use. Does not require you to unhook anything to back up into tight spaces. I know you said money is no object however it's price is considerably less than the Hensley or Propride. Price is more in line with all of the others mentioned here.
  • For a newbie, I would go with Equalizer. Lots of comments and arguments on the other brands (too expensive, the ONLY one to buy, Anderson is too new and/or can't move the weight enough, etc.). Everyone seems to agree that the Equalizer 4-point hitch is a very good, reasonably priced hitch that you can use for years with no issues.
  • I think the best value and simplest is the Anderson hitch. Less expensive, lightweight, simple, easy to install, setup, and use. Infinitely adjustable. Don't need to disconnect when backing. As an added bonus all the people at the RV store will ask about it ;-)
  • Hensley Arrow or it's copy the Pro Pride. No sway, set it and forget it. The best, and most expensive ($3K+)hitches out there.

Add PullRite to the list. It is expensive, heavy, custom fit for your tow vehicle but it works. It actually functions much like a fifth wheel hitch for sway control and weight distribution only for a TT and is mounted under the truck bed. The hitch is around 400 pounds so it does affect the payload of the tow vehicle and sometimes requires minor rerouting of the exhaust. Unlike Hensley and ProPride and almost all other hitches, the PullRite provides about 70 degrees of movement that can help greatly in tight situations where turning is limited.
  • I agree that Hensley or Pro Pride are probably the BEST but totally unnecessary if you have an adequate tow vehicle with a trailer sized to fit it. Best VALUE in a WD system is either Reece Duel Cam (my own choice) or Equalizer (for those who prefer a straight friction based unit). BOTH will give excellent weight distributing and (as good as any on the market) and very good anti sway control.
    Good luck / Skip
