- Me_AgainExplorer IIIHeck the lowly old Dodge 47RE is used behind some race Duramax applications. It and its father and grandfather are the true gold standard of auto tranny's.
People seem to confuse the Allison 1000 with the much more robust 3000.

Actually not that long ago, the Allison failure rate was pretty high in modified trucks. I haven't paid much attention, but the newer models seem to hold up fairly well. The Allison is a real good transmission, but it isn't the holy grail that everybody wants to make it out to be.
:SAnd your point is?
The Allison is the gold standard in stock trucks.... If you are gonna start modding,,, be prepared to do MORE than just put a chip in it.
If you wanna play, you gotta pay.
Speed costs money.... How fast do you want to go?:B
Gold standard? Ram and Ford both have better transmissions than the Alison. - 720DeereExplorerWow somebody is a little touchy! There is one transmission that is not an Allison that has held well over 500 hp in stock form for over 10 years now. I guess I just want the legendary "gold standard" to hold up better than this obviously inferior transmission! Wow I didn't need red print or head smacking smilies to say any of that.

I'm surprised that the new Ford medium duty (F650/750)doesn't offer engines/transmissions more typical in other MDT brands, in order to be competitive.
I don't know if they are going to be selling for less than IH , Freightliner, etc...given the engine lineups include just two...a diesel engine till now, just used in pickups (6.7 diesel) and a gas engine. Not sure if any other current MDT's even have a gas engine as an available option.
I'm a bit disappointed. I used to drive MDT F series trucks a number of years ago. Thought they were good trucks and competitive in the market.
I guess we shall see.
Maybe their strategy is to be different? Really there's a half-dozen MDTs which all have the same engine, transmissions, and axles. There only so much you can do with 34" wide ladder frame, so the only thing effectively separating many MDTs is just the cabs!
I think Ford has to be careful about being different. If their difference is to offer two engines that may have lesser durability than the competition than I can't think that will give them the competitive edge in the MDT market. In the MDT market it's important to have vehicles that can take severe service, with little downtime. I'm not saying the new Ford MDT won't be in the same class as the other MDT...I don't know...but given these engines were originally designed for light(er) duty trucks (pickups), I wonder if this strategy to use these engines is the best plan.
I think it comes down to durability ratings of these engines. Are they comparable to the typical MDT engines used in the competition is my question ?
And yes, the V10 is currently the only MDT gas engine for sale. PSI did try to sell a 8.8L V8 (based on the GM 8.1L architecture), however they took the information down from their website (or maybe they didn't get EPA compliance?). A few RV makers even listed it as a future option, and PSI had marketing material for potential MDT applications.
Ford is down to the F 650/F 750 at the top of their truck line. It's a far cry from their former position where they had 'full' lines of both MDT and HDT truck lines.
It's an extremely competitive MDT market out there. I don't want to see Ford out of the heavier MDT market completely. By 'heavier' I mean more so than the F 450/550 line which are lighter MDT.
What I'm saying is that I'm surprised at the powertrain choices in these re-done trucks. - carringbExplorer

Ole well the Dodge boys can't use the old statement " Why do Fords use a Cummins in the 650 & 750 trucks" much longer :B
Hey at least Ford is using the Ram mirrors now :W
The new PSD numbers should be interesting when they are released.

California's South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Highway Patrol frowns upon modifications to your Vehicles here in California. A couple of hundred dollars fine for ANY engine mods! Including LAWN MOWERS! And the fines are $50.00 for burning trash in your back yard.
So after owning dozens of Ford products in the past AND being a FORMER loyal Ford Guy with 12 Fords in 25 years...I am now officially vaccinated with the "NOMOREFORDS4ME" inoculation.
The 6 new cars myself and my family have purchased after selling off all the Fords are all brand new Made in USA and Made in Korea KIA's!
Great vehicles and that 100,000 mile warranty is nice too!
Hey...I know my login name is still "Fordsooperdooty", but just wait!
I'm sure Korea thanks you! :E
Hey Troy
This member was the biggest, I mean biggest Ford guy on this forum. He made Ricatic look really small and frankly I thought he was either a Ford salesperson like yourself, or a RV salesperson.
I was shocked when his dear 6.0 when down, oh wait his family owned two of em..... Hopefully his son got rid of the other POS before it blew like they all will in due time.
OBTW he won't rattle sabers with you, he moves on and will tell his story much like Ric does.
But KIA Clint, really?????
Hey Rick
Whatever floats your boat or anyone else, well except a Kia or maybe even a Fiat! :B
BTW... Let's talk when your cummins gets to the miles I had when I sold my 6.0 PSD. :W
Enjoy... :B 45Ricochet wrote:
