A couple of years ago, Ford made some changes to their F450 pickup truck including swapping in 16" wheels/tires that brought its payload capacity way way down.
The biggest campers can weigh over 5000lbs these days too. People have posted such mammoth weights on here. A fully decked-out diesel dually with crew cab, 4x4 and all the options can have <5000lb payload remaining to GVWR.
Thank you!
I just stumbled across this post I started and forgot about...haha. Lots of harsh words used to describe my knowledge... Fair enough, because I didn't leave much detail and probably should have left the /550 out of the post. Good luck finding one of those on the lot with a ford truck bed. If I'm wrong about the f350 dually not having the highest payload then I'm willing to listen and learn. I should have also clarified that I'm not talking about ordering a frikn CC and having to modify to get a pickup bed. I'm also trying to say that for the heaviest truck camper on the market a 2014 F350 dually in gas form will have a 6800lb slide in camper allowance assuming all available seats occupied by 150lb persons according to Fords website. Even if you ordered a CC and wanted to go through all the trouble to get the 16500 GVWR you still need to figure your payload. I'm guessing the curb weight would be around 9000lbs after proper mods. One poster talked about Ford derating the F450 in 2011 to 13050lbs gvwr and that further dimishes the payload!! I currently own a 2010 F450 for that very reason. My gvwr is 14500lbs which gives me just under 6000lbs payload. That is still a long way from a 2014 F350 Dually gasser. I still prefer my 2010 F450 though because of the brakes, wheels, axel and especially the turning radius is a nice bonus. If you want to order a 550 CC and go through the time, expense and hassle that's great!!! My point was it's not necessary. If want to tow a massive load and carry a truck camper that's a different story. I personally wouldn't want anything but my F450 for towing my boat and hauling the camper, but if you look at the the trucks on the lot at your local Ford Dealer the f350 dually gas wins on payload, and you don't need a modified CC450/550 to haul a truck camper! Nice forum by the way! My info was from link below. Cheers

. - BedlamModeratorA 9' flat bed on the 60" cab to axle chassis cabs will work without cutting anything up.
- jimh406Explorer IIIF550 would be cool, but that pretty much means a custom body or cutting the frame. I wasn't ready to go there yet, so I went with the tiny F450 for my tiny 4000 lb camper. :B

Absolutely and that would be me! Why leave home without it, especially when does not have one to return to. :B
A F-550 comes into play when someone wants to take a truck frame and build up a specialty RV rig that will have more storage space for extended travel for people who have the perceived need to take along every creature comfort when they go glamping.
b - BedlamModeratorIf you tow heavy with a long extension due to your TC, the F550 RAWR also helps.
- jimh406Explorer IIIChassis F450s are rated quite a bit higher than F450 pickup models or F350s if you are going chassis that would be another option as well instead of F550. They are almost at 9000 in Crew Cab form. 19.5s are also on F450s for most years which is both an advantage or disadvantage depending on what you want but would be the same compared to a F550. F450s also have a very tight turn radius, larger rear brakes and differential which is a major advantage compared to a F350 as far as I'm concerned.
