I've noticed people saying that an f450/550 is needed for the heaviest truck campers?? You guys realize that the f-350 dually has a higher payload right?
Hmmm...... new guy and his first post on weights and no numbers.
Hope he has the proper license. I'll bite.

TC's have changed since your 2003 Lance. You can now get four slides with a floor that starts above the bed rails and over 75 gallons of fresh water. All these additions cost weight and a Class 3 truck will not cut it. Check out Host, Chalet, Eagle Cap and Adventurer for their premier models to get an idea of the scope and weight of these units.
I am looking at what TC we will get next and a Class 5 truck is the first step to get there...
OMG... a 4 slide TC.
I can imagine that there is one slide on each side and one on the rear..
where in the world is the 4th?
does it have an upstairs?
or does the cabover shoot forward?
So far I feel like I'm getting opinion in the two responses... when I'd like to see some facts. I'm pretty sure the OP would like some specific facts too
Opinions are OK, but Facts are a necessity for good decission making!

I'm lost... after 44 years of continusly owning a TC I need to be taught all over it seems.
My question is serious... I am not trying to muddy the weater.
What campers are being built that a 1 ton dually can't haul.
Does any of the TC manufactures specify a truck larger than a one ton to haul their campers?
To me...
This is a truck camper forum... it isn't about towing a house trailer... it is about placing a truck camper in the bed of the truck and hauling the truck camper.
To me... the truck should be factory equipted... no aftermarket stuff to beef it up.
... will a factory equipted truck haul the biggest... or heaviest TC manufactured?
Thanks in advance for not muddying the water more than it is.

lol, without muddy waters, there wouldn't be any discussions.
'1 ton' hasn't meant a thing in ages. I still can't figure out why everyone uses that term.
And towing is relevant. I dare say 1/2 or more of the T/C owners; it's probably one of the reasons they trend towards the truck camper. Not a lot of 4x Class C's to choose from I think.
I've got to add, I'm as anti weight-police as they get. Seems like half the time on here we're splitting hairs about 50 pounds over on a tire or some stupid crap. But the fact remains, just 'cause the 'payload capacity' looks right, we as humans always add more, tow more and load it imperfectly. And more than anything else, I like to stop when I want too. Brakes are a huge factor in the difference in trucks.
OP was asking a specific question; what's the difference? and a statement based on an assumption probably from lack of information.
I love muddy waters.. if it was really all crystal clear, no one would ask questions. - BedlamModeratorTC's have changed since your 2003 Lance. "H rated and tires rated at 4900 lbs each, Dana 135 rear end, things like that."
Thats funny right there 'lil "things like that" a D135.
jeesh-could carry my truck let alone the camper. - jimh406Explorer IIIYeah, my pickup style F450 RAWR is only 9500 and the front is 6000. Way too light for a tc especially considering the diesel and 4.30s.

You're comparing p/u's.. the 450 p/u was designed to tow. It's a different truck than a 450 chassis (550/5500, etc).
So in a nut shell, both the 350/450 p/u's are too small for the largest tc's... - BedlamModerator2005 had brake and frame upgrades allowing for greater weights. My 250 definitely benefited and is very capable against today's 3/4t trucks.

It's interesting to read through and compare. The jump between 2004 and 2005 is interesting. Prior to 2005 you could upgrade engine or rear end and tow capacity was capped at 20,000# GCVWR. Post 2005 the numbers just climb. It's also interesting how cargo capacity of a F250 can be doubled depending upon specs.
