Bilstein 4600 Shocks

I'm replacing my Bilstein 4600 shocks, which have 100K miles on them. Last summer I found my camper rolling from side to side more, and dumping things on the floor.

Since they worked really well initially, I'm sticking with them. I checked the Bilstein website for the proper part numbers. I see they have a rear shock specifically for trucks carrying a slide-in camper. I didn't use that model initially, just the standard one. Has anyone had experience with their "truck camper" rear shock?

Thanks,

A call to Bilstein and discussion of my application and they provided the exact PN's for 4600 series for our Chevy for TC hauling duty.
Purchased the shock at shock warehouse.com
    Very pleased.
Firmed up the handling real nice.
Only have ~ 15k miles on them so can't vouch for longevity yet...

    Good luck, Bill

    What is the part number?

They are still listing that camper shock for GMC/chevy at summit racing and other places .The stock number is 24-186575 . They also list a different shock for a 3500 , 24-185677 .

There was a problem on early 4600 series with the lower rubber bushing mount on front shocks . I called Bilstein and they sent out 4 new shocks no questions asked , except for receipt ,and didn't have to return old shocks .

I spoke to both the marketing and technical departments at both the California (Poway) office and the NA HQ in OH a few months ago, and was told that there might be old TC valved stock in the market, but they were no longer manufacturing new 4600s with special TC valving (due to low sales and stockage issues).

They also said they had complaints about the truck being severely overdamped (on compression) when unloaded (with the additive effect of a heavy spring pack and heavily damped shocks).

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, they will custom valve 4600 shocks for you if you still feel the need for the heavier damped shocks.

This is what I was told at least...

As far as your warranty issue, it's also been my experience that Bilstein has fabulous customer service.

    Thanks for the input.

I knew about the life time warranty. I bought them online. Therefore, not feasible to send them back for replacement. Not sure if "decreased performance" would even be covered.

I'm going to email Bilstein and find out what is unique about the truck camper model before I order them.

Bilstein no longer offers truck camper specific 4600s.

They will revalve a stock shock to your specifications, but the cost gets high really quickly.

Their warranty does cover loss of damping. I'd call them up to discuss the warranty and see if they'll just let you pay for revalving the new ones to match the weight and spring rate of your rig. You'd still come out ahead of buying new, stock valved shocks, and you'd have the damping rate you want.

  • Interesting, I was not aware of lifetime warranty...add to list of reading material.
  • I have 4600s, but I don't think mine are truck camper models. If I remember right, there was only one choice for my truck when I bought mine.
  • If you are the original purchaser Bilstein has a life time warranty.
  • Ralph,

I recently purchased all my 4600 shocks from Amazon since they had the best price and Prime 2 days delivery. And didn't have any option as you mentioned.
