IF you go to the trouble of taking window frame out, then take it to a glass shop WHY would you have them install plexiglass or anything else :H
Have them replace the glass.
In other words....you do not need to buy a complete new window.
Just have existing one fix by installing new glass
Something current owner should have done as condition of purchase.
X2!
Well said.
In fact the current owners INSURANCE COMPANY SHOULD HAVE PAID FOR THE REPAIR.
if they don't have RV insurance and the RV is on their property their HOME OWNERS INSURANCE SHOULD COVER THE REPAIR..
Fix it correctly now instead of fixing the water damage later (much cheaper now).
Make sure you ask to have the glass TEMPERED (now days folks refer to tempered glass as "safety glass").. Tempered glass is far more stronger than plain plate glass AND has the benefit of when breaking it breaks into thousand of less hazardous pieces instead of large sharp pieces..
The glass company will cut to fit THEN temper the glass, they may need to send out for the tempering so you can simply board up the opening where the window was until the window is ready to install.
It would be less than their deductible to repair the window.
As far as using tempered glass vs plexiglass, I probably will go with plexiglass.
Curious as to why plexy??
Plexy is pretty expensive compared to TEMPERED glass, scratches easily, gets crazed in sunlight and bends/flexes a lot and gets extremely brittle at extreme low temperature.
The only thing it has going for it is it can be cut by a homeowner, BUT use the wrong tools/method plexy WILL shatter the wrong way.. Toasting plexy, turning a rather expensive piece of plastic into junk.
I am really puzzled with folks who misunderstand the tempered glass thing and the resistance to doing it correctly in the first place..
Tempered glass is actually stronger and safer than plexy.
Plexy when broken will shatter into large sharp edged shards (pretty much the same as standard plate glass which is not tempered), tempered glass small more rounded pieces.
Getting tempered glass IS simple and easy and inexpensive, pretty cheap actually.. I had a 2.5'x2.5' window in my TT that was broken when I bought it.
I called my local home glass shop, they needed the frame.
I removed the frame and took it to the glass shop.
They color matched the glass.
They cut and fit the glass.
They sent the glass out to get tempered.
When they got the glass back from tempering they installed the glass into the frame.
They charged me a whopping $50.. And if the glass shop broke or messed up the cut, the cost of making it right was on them, not me.
I could buy a sheet of plexy for that price and I would have had to cut and fit the plexy.
I reinstalled the frame and I was done with the whole thing.
The whole process took less than one week to get done.
