The way new trans have performed lately I would wait for the 10 speed myself. The higher number of gears don't seem to be hindering longevity or strength at all. Their driveability is better than their predecessors and maint. intervals are better if not more expensive in some cases.
I'll be in the market in the next 5~7 years as well and will be watching for one of these mega-geared monsters.
I am leaning towards a new Ram but if they don't have an 8 to 10 speed trans by then I'll go elsewhere.
