Cabelas Camping

We are making a trip this summer from Central MN to Hill City, SD and I was looking at stopping at Mitchell,SD and camping one night in the parking lot of Cabela's. I was wondering if anyone has ever camped in a parking lot of any stores anywhere and if so how did it go? Did you feel safe?

  • We have stayed at cabela's before and it was a positive experience. In our case we were in Lehigh, Utah. There were signs posted saying no overnight camping but yet it was obvious that the area had been used for that. So went in the store, spent a few bucks (not hard to do at cabela's) and asked about it. They said oh yes it's fine, we were more than welcome. They had security, a dump station and fresh water. I believe the signs are there to make sure you talk to them first. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again
  • I've never camped in a parking lot but I have parked overnight at many different stores. I seldom ask permission because I normally pull in after the store is closed. However, I have never overnighted at Cabela's but they do welcome RVers.

    x2

We always pull in, go to store manager and make sure it is OK with them....(courtesy thing), pick up some thing we might need, spend big bucks in Cabella's each year, and then go back to TH - we will only extend the slide as far as we need to get by to get into the bathroom and we turn in. We don't have out chairs or stoves...it is merely an overnighter for a few zzzz's before we get back on the road again.
  • I have spent the night at the Walmart in Mitchell, SD.

  • We camped one night in the parking lot of the Walmart in Winnemucca NV. It was well lit, and we didn't feel unsafe. HOWEVER, those store parking lots are graded so that they will drain well, and it was impossible to find a spot that was mostly level.
  • there are several nice camps around Mitchell. Surely one of them would give you a safer, better experience than cabelas parking lot.
