Mine breaks down like this; F-150 E-boost. Max cargo from sticker on door 1400 lbs.
Two adult and dog 500 lbs. truck cap 200 lbs. WD hitch 70 lbs. tongue weight with torsion bar weight transfer 480 lbs. extra gas, tools and stuff another 200 lbs.
If you do the math you will see I am a bit over the max cargo. My 26 ft. Dutchmen weighs 5000 lbs. empty and perhaps 1000 lbs. more loaded but the rig pulls nice and fits my wife and me perfectly.
The bottom line is keep as close to the Max cargo as practical, which means for most ½ ton trucks; a TT of about 5000 lbs. or so.
Yes we would all like to have one of those super whiz-bang, heavy duty, stump pulling, diesel behemoths but unless it is a dedicated vehicle you have to ask how many days a year are you going to use it for towing.
