camper to truck install advice

hi all,
hope you don't mind some dumb questions.

just got my first camper, 2000 Phoenix Camper, pop up style, that i am going to mount on my 2013 F150.
so the camper is shorter than the sides of the truck bed by about 3 inches.
i want to build up the bed to meet the bottom of the camper with something like this style:
http://www.rv.net/forum/Index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/16957495.cfm

so do you think the camper should rest on the top of the sides of the bed also or is it not that important? do you think i should add some foam to the top of the bed sides?

thanks for your advice, Bob
  • Scarletfire - what you had a link to will certainly work, but it would be a lot easier to go buy four 4X4s which will actually be 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" and put them in the bed length wise. Your TC should then clear the bed rails by 1/2"

  • At least with a pop up, you won't be overloaded. The camper can never touch the bed rail tops. Just the bed floor.
  • That is quite a gap ~~ 3" front to rear ~ or are you saying 3" gap between bottom of camper and bed of truck (vertical). My camper rests on 1" boards placed across the bed of truck. Sides of camper clear top of bed sides by +- 3/4". You are going to build a 'base'

    JM2¢ ~ YMMV
  • The camper should not touch the bed sides. You don't need much clearance, 3/4 of an inch would do it. All the weight should be supported by the bed floor.
