I was born in Tampa and raised/live in Seffner which is between Lakeland and Tampa. My family lives in Zephyrhills, Lakeland, and Plant City. We camp all year long, mainly at state parks around the state - yeah it's a pain to get reservations but planning 6 months ahead helps with my work schedule. Most of the state parks save a couple of spots for last minute walk-ups. I also have a Thousand Trails membership and use it for last minute jump into the trailer trips - the closest is 45 minutes away and just outside of Orlando. I won't lie, your first year here will be hot but you will get used to it and start enjoying the empty summer campgrounds because it's too hot for the other transplants. I find it harder to camp in the winter due to the influx of snowbirds. I pay 80 dollars a month for non-covered storage in Tampa, but it's close to the house and the owner stays on the property so I have that false sense of security - I just started to cover my trailer this summer. Lakeland is a good place to live, they have a minor league baseball team that is good/cheap to watch and the city does more small town stuff and you are close to both Tampa and Orlando for the large city stuff. Good Luck...
