Checking for water system leaks in a Northern Lite

I've got a 2018 Northern Lite 9-6 Sportsman. On a recent trip I noticed the water pump started short cycling every minute or 2 when no water was running...just a half second chirp. My first thought was that there was a leak in the fresh water system that was slowly depressurizing the lines when the pump was on. I checked the compartment below the seat where the pump is located and don't see any signs of moisture either on the pump, visible pipes/valves, or on the wooden basement floor immediately below the pump. Beyond that, how do I locate a leak on the parts of the system that aren't visible from the bench seat opening?

Thank you,
Scott

  • I found few times that check valves on pumps deteriorate with years and they can leak the water back to the tank.
Good idea to buy rebuild kit every few years.
  • Water heater pressure relief valve (the one you see when you drop the water heater door on the outside) is weak and releasing a little. It happens. It will also do it if there is a calcium buildup.

Or on the inlet side (not the pressurized side) of the pump the hose is just loose enough so it emits a little air into the system. That is a common one folks often miss.
  • On my Northern Lite all of the plumbing is accessible behind the drawers and cabinets. The out side shower is off a T behind a access port that is in the wall of the dry bath. Not sure if that port is also in the wet bath?
  • Several ways to confirm leak. I use air. I installed brass "tank plug" in both sides cold and hot. I air up to 50 psi and if no leaks no loss of psi. If you lose psi then to game of where leak is sometimes the hard part. Common leak places are connections...water heater back of shower or faucets etc

You need to expand your search - common places for leaks are where the water pipes have junctions - outside shower and faucet fittings would also be high on my list. Once you rule those out then focus on the pump. Leak might be very tiny and it may not be obvious.

This gets back to my original question: How do I gain access to those hidden areas where a leak may exist? There are no access doors that I can see to check beneath the kitchen and bath sinks, toilet, outside shower, water heater plumbing.

  • You definitely have a leak. I turned on my water system several days ago. After it pressurized, I turned off the pump. I checked today and the pump did not activate when I put the switch to on.

Over the years, I have had some leaks. First the seals on the old pump started to ooze. Next the value on the water hook up started to leak, probably from frost damage. Several times I have had slow leaks on the water heater drain plug. I finally got a new plug this year instead of just using a lot of Teflon tape.
  • Could be a tap, could be a leak or it could be the valves on the pump are letting water/pressure back into the tank and it needs to pressurize. I am leaning to the last as it is starting and stopping so fast but that is just a guess.
  • I have a 2018 NL 8-11, every now and then I get that as well and I have had that happen is just about every RV I have owned. Usually “ I have found” that there is a water valve kitchen sink, bathroom, sink, outside shower... one of those taps is open just enough so that when the system is pressurized, the air will slowly escape and the pump has to re pressurize the system, you won’t see any water... it’s just air escaping they by the system won’t stay pressurized very long. I found the outside shower tap just cracked every so slightly a few times. Most time when you check them to ensure they are closed 100% you won’t even notice the movement it is so slight.
I’m not saying this is your issue, but check everything that is on the water system to make sure it is closed and tight, even the fill cap for the fresh water tank.
    Good luck
