Choice of rear axle on 2016 F350

Hi everyone. We're ordering a new F350 (4x4 CC LB Diesel) and are trying to decide between the 3.73 and 4.30 rear axles. Presumably the 3.73 will have significantly better MPG, both empty and towing, but I can't find any information on how much the MPG will decrease with the 4.3. Any information -- even 'guesstimates' -- will be appreciated.
FYI, the numbers: tow capacity 3.73 (23.5K), 4.3 (26.5K). The 4.3 also comes with the better handling 'wide-track' front axle (per description of 'TRAILER TOW PACKAGE – HIGH CAPACITY (535)' in 2016 ordering guide) and increases GCW from 31.9K to 35K. We will be towing a fifth wheel with about 16.5K GVWR for the foreseeable future, but ... who knows :). Thanks in advance.

  • Can't comment about which axle ratio would be best for your load and driving usage. But the wide track front axle should provide a greater steering wheel cut. Cars and light trucks are normally around 36 degrees while heavy duty rigs are around 54 degrees. The increased angle will make it easier to get in and out of tight situations. But you need to verify that wide track also means greater wheel cut.
  • My chassis cab had a choice of 4.10, 4.44 or 4.88 - I chose the 4.44 and am happy with it since I do not drive the truck faster than 65 mph. If you think you will be doing any extended driving at higher speeds, I would suggest the 4.10 ratio. For people like me the 4.30 or 4.44 is a great towing ratio that is comfortable in the 55-65 mph range. The 4.88 gears are great for heavy loads, but makes the engine spin too fast for comfortable long highway drives.

If I was choosing, I would take the wide track with 4.30's.
