I understand that, but I also think one has to have a little common sense. I wouldn't buy a half ton if I was regularly towing an 9k lb trailer, even though I would be within all of the vehicle ratings. But I would cheat a little on a 2500 diesel payload because that's a artificial number that's derived from a GVWR that's downrated for reasons unrelated to the vehicle's capabilities. I wouldn't recommend grossly overloading the payload regularly, just for liability reasons, but again that brings us back to the common sense thing I mentiond.
