Well I have to admit that's pretty imaginative reasoning I've never heard of before! :S

Fact is, a trailer's water system wouldn't pressurize if the city water inlet didn't have a check valve to prevent the pump from forcing water OUT that inlet when no hose is attached, just as is the situation the OP is complaining about. The solution is simple - either make sure that check valve is working or seal that inlet with any one of various solutions suggested earlier in this discussion. Trailer manufacturers most often just stick a rubber dust cap on that inlet but I always replace it with a threaded 3/4" GH male plug that not only keeps the inlet dirt free but also seals it tightly in the event the check valve itself should ever fail.

When I was winterizing this past fall the little white ring blew off of the junkie little check valve. I found the ring and re-assembled the valve. It had a tendency to leak a little when using the pump without the city water hooked up.
I went to the hardware store and picked up this nifty brass ball valve that screwed right on. The original rubber dust cap still fits.

I removed the check valve parts from inside our city water inlet and enlarged the opening with a drill to provide better flow. Then I used a quality brass check valve with 1/2" thread on the interior side of the inlet (similar to photo). Threads right onto the inlet threads.

Not needed UNTIL city water source unavailable and have to use pump.

either 'plug' as suggested or the shut off valve as suggested

I use the valve cause I leave it in place all the time and don't have to find a plug when needed.

Since the OP is seasonal, always uses city water, and never draws water from the fresh water holding tank that city water inlet check valve wouldn't be doing anything anyway even if it did work ... ergo, there's absolutely no advantage in replacing it, nor does he need any sort of shut off valve sitting on that inlet as the campsite city water feed will always be connected to the city water inlet. If he does disconnect the city water hose and wants to seal the inlet it's a simple matter using a threaded water inlet plug designed specifically for this purpose.
