Coleman Mach 8 Cub vs Smarter Tools AP-2000IQ

First, I camp into the 80s without AC, so I wasn't suffering at all as a result of the generator not working. DWs uncle wasn't running his either.

This was simply as a test because my wife's uncle had one and he was camping next to us. It works great for him with his window type generator, so I'm not saying this is a bad generator. My intent is just to pass on some information for those who may be considering this combination.

My Host has built-in Onan 2500, and I verified that it will run my AC with no issues just after. My AC was bought around a month ago, so it is a newer model. More specs here. http://www.airxcel.com/coleman-mach/products/air-conditioners/ultra-low-profile/mach-8/mach-8-cub

1. I unplugged the battery charger/converter.
2. I switched my fridge to propane only.
3. I had no other appliances on.

We started the generator and let it run until it could run with a smooth idle. I tried the following two settings.

1. Smart Throttle off.
2. Smart Throttle on.

As you can see from the picture, this generator has a Yamaha MZ80 engine. The elevation was approximately 1000 ft and the temperature was approximate 80.

In both switch positions, as soon as I switched the AC to low cool, the Smarter Tools generator went to an Overload condition and switched off.

Here's a picture of the generator used.

  • Just looking at the specifications you posted I don't think your generator is powerful enough.

From your link the a/c lists running watts as:

    Standard: 1270 watts
    Desert: 1550 watts

The generator claims 1600 watts but may not make that.

Note the "locked Rotor amps: 58.4 amps. This is the start-up or surge requirement. I believe this is your problem as your generator can't deliver this.
  • I had the same experience with the same a/c unit with my Champion (which is also an 80cc engine, I believe based on the Yamaha engine).

I think it comes down to the size of the engine, the Honda is 100cc and once I upgraded to the Honda it runs the a/c on eco mode.
  • brholt, no doubt the Smarter Tools generator didn't work with my AC, but it wasn't my generator. To bad that I didn't have a hard start kit to try, but maybe some other time.
  • I have the same AC unit and my Yamaha 2000 runs it just fine! Nothing else can be on but it does the job!

That's interesting, and implies like others have suggested that just having a similar motor isn't the key. Well, I'm guessing your Yamaha might also have the 80cc motor.
  • I have the Mach on my TC and my Honda 2000i starts and runs the AC on Eco.
  • I bought a new mach 8 for my old TC about 3 months ago, and tried 3 different 1600/2000 generators and not one would start it. I called coleman and they said ever since they had to change to the new coolant a few years back they do not make an ac unit that can start on 2000 watts. I just bought a new adventurer camper and it has a mach 1 PS 11k, and same thing, it will not start on a 2000. I did get the new unit to fire and run on a 2500watt generator. I even added a hard start cap, and it still will not fire on my 2000. My buddy has an older mach 1 PS, and it runs no problem.
