The CP4 and CP3 were designed to run without a lift pump. That is also the reason why they don't make this mod for the LML Duramax since it doesn't have a lift pump and a filter to catch the metal particles if it explodes so it would be pointless. The design is simple, but requires a vehicle with a lift pump and preferably a primary filter.
Bosch wanted to make these pumps for more applications which is why the original design is the way it is. What they didn't account for is how badly the pump grenades when it fails. I think GM is also partly to blame since they did not have a lift pump or primary filter and extended their filter change intervals to over 22k miles. They were just asking for trouble. Ford at least had these along with a shorter interval which is probably why they felt they were not liable since most issues were caused by bad fuel.
