Cracked Chevy Bed

Anyone experienced this? I found two cracks about 4" forward of the tailgate about 6" in from the sides. The picture is the Passenger side with the Driver side crack about an 1" long, but in the same place. The TC combination in my sig line has been carried about 2/3 of the current 39,000 miles on our 2013 LWB Chevy. I've asked my local Chevy dealer to contact the factory for comment and how it can be fixed. I was in the process of measuring for a piece of plywood to shore up the front/rear of the TC as I just recently learned that Chevy puts a crown in the middle of their pickup boxes. Guess I'll be looking for steel plate instead!

  • Your Bronco 1200's floor flexes enough to conform to the crown. Don't worry about it.

This whole deal of the crown causing porpoising and rocking of the camper is a tough concept for me to swallow. The campers are not THAT rigid, plain and simple.

These beds have apparently had a crown since at least the 2007 NBS, yet this is the first anyone has noticed! If it was such a critical issue, surely someone would have figured it out before now.
  • Wow...that really sucks!! I hope GM steps up to the plate and fixes it for you. Like others here I can't believe GM would design something stupid like that. Its not like truck owners would ever lay heavy flat items in the bed of their trucks :R (sarcasm intended) Good luck

At least, you'll be going after it with eyes open although I'd reconsider knowing what's been posted here.
  • The corrective measures talked about here to "level out" the 2015 GM pick-up bed crown sound worrying to me. Think about it: your 3000, 4000+ LB camper will be sitting acutely (severely) on just 3 support points in the sheet metal bed (even using high or low-density XPS foam).

Those with the cracked sheet metal: what is directly under those cracks (what if anything is under the cracked sheet metal, underneath your trucks at precisely the crack) ? Any photos of the under-bed structure under the cracks ?

Further to this bed "crown" issue, I cannot find anything published by GM on it (also, nothing mentioned in the GM Upfitter's manual).

I'm putting this on my "follow" list...
  • I'm just sitting here taking notes - we pick up our (slightly-used) 2015 Chevy 2500HD diesel tomorrow :-) Have decided the Ram 1500 Hemi is a fun grocery-getter, but not really a workhorse. My Bronco 1200 popup sits on steel crossbars; but I'd like to think its light weight and low profile wouldn't have punched holes in the truck bed anyway.... but since it sounds like it will be sitting on plywood to flatten the rocker, it should be fine?

At least Chevy learn how to paint the truck.
Other of my friend bought Chevy truck in 1990's and the paint was coming off at 65mph.
The warranty paint shop was so booked, that he was on 8 months waiting list for warranty repainting.

Every domestic automaker had paint issues in the 90s.

I had the same problem with a 2008 civic I used for a daily driver. Paint was peeling off the roof. This is a very common Honda issue and they extended the warrantee for 7 years. When I brought it in, they told me it was 1-1/2 month past the 7 year mark of the original sold date and wouldn't cover anything. I no longer have that POC.
  • It is normal.
My friend drives Chevy with truckboxes on the bed and has whole corners at taillights separating from the rest of the body.
Chevy voided the warranty becouse he is carrying contractor toolboxes on contractor's truck.

The crown only seems to be on 2015+ HD trucks.

I wish that was the case. Crowned bed

Yes, I have the similar crack, but shorter. I can't remember if I took a picture of it or not. I found the crack about 2 months ago when I took the bed mat out.

Like you, my camper has been on my truck at least 2/3 of the 42k miles I have on my 2009 3500HD.

I have always used a bed mat in my truck. I think here's some excess pressure points on eh bed of the truck from the trim pieces on the bottom of my AF811 truck camper. The trim pieces go around the perimeter of the camper, which lines up with the crack on the driver side.

Since your camper is also an AF, I bet the cause of the crack is identical to mine - the trim pieces that hold the bottom panel on the camper.

As far as I know, the crown is only on 2015+ HD trucks.

In the next few days I will pull my tailgate. Once its off, I can get a clear view of the floor of the truck bed and put a straight edge on it to confirm its flat. I've never heard of the crowned bed problem until the two threads here on RV.net, both of which are regarding 2015 GM trucks.
