We have an old 2000 7.3L. It is pretty noisy and I kind of lost my taste for the droning, noisy diesels at work long before owning the truck. But the 7.3 does get better fuel economy than our quiet, smooth 2000 Excursion V-10. It seems there was once a 7.3L mod that had a quiet idle mode to it (fast food line) but I don't remember where. Most aftermarket mods aren't designed for economy or quiet.
When I was a kid I had an old, stripped 305 Honda Scrambler. It never came with a muffler when I bought it and I think it was used as a flat-tracker. It didn't have a headlight anymore either, so when I used it on the road I had a rigged bucket on the fork with a large 12v headlight(HL) to be legal. The HL sucked so much juice that it wouldn't idle low when on, and I had it semi-permanently twist-nutted to leftover wire stubs, hard to turn off.
I stopped for a stoplight one night in my home town, having started to cruise main after more than a few beers. The exhaust had snubbers on them (washers that slightly muted exhaust) but I still sweated when a patrol pulled up beside me. They were really touchy about noise back then and I worried I could also get a DUI for good measure just for sounding so obnoxius.
So I idled way down and the bike died. I let the patrol car go first but he still got behind me and pulled me over. All he wanted was whether I had a specific bike license, as they were a new thing at the time. I did and he let me go. Three sheets to the wind, I forgot all about a halfpint of Peppermint Schnapps sticking out of my back pocket, and he never said a word. Back then, making motorcycle noise was almost the worst thing a man might do.
