Diesel MPG and fuel additives

I recently purchased a RAM 3500 DRW with a 3.73 rear and ASIAN transmission. I am not using any fuel additive at this time. I only get about 14-15 MPG not towing at 65 on level ground and about 7-8 MPG towing a Montana fifth wheel on level. Is this all I can expect? my older 5.9 with 4RE transmission got 21 not towing and 11 towing on level at 65.

I would like to know what MPG others are getting and with what vehicle and what fuel additives they are using with new diesels.

I have checked my mpg on my old diesel several times and Diesel Kleen boost my mpg 2 to 3 mpg everytime. Not enough to pay for itself but the biist in power is nice towing. :)

REALLY? That is amazing!!!! Have they called to use you in their adds?

    Another fact not known is

what year is the Ram 3500??????

Is it before or after Ram started using DEF in the latest versions.

The DEF versions supposedly get better MPG's.

If it does not require DEF, then perhaps that is as good a mileage as you are going to get.

The OP stated he has an Asain transmission, so it has to be at least a 2013 unless it is a C&C.
I agree something is not right. Lie o meter or hand calculation is the first question.

Fuel additives will not help mileage. If this is a 13 or later, it might get better with time. Set it on the fuel economy setting on the EVIC and it will show real time fuel loading. Not exactly accurate, but helps teach you how to drive for better mileage. I have a 13 2500 4x4 with the 3.42 and get 20-22 MPG on the road if I drive the speed limit. Average 16-17 around combined city/ highway. Towing my fifth wheel at 8000 lbs, about 14MPG. Love my truck.
BTW, the transmission is not an ASIAN transmission. It is an AISIN, made by AISIN SEIKI.

  • Is that mileage via 'lie-o-meter' in truck
OR actually hand calculated via miles driven/gallons used :H

Hand calculated........sounds really low. Thought the 6.7L CTD got 10-11 mpg towing
  • I use howes, I see an improvement every time I use it - but headwind / tailwind / no wind make far more difference.
  • Fuel additives might help a little, but not enough to justify the cost of the additives. When you do need them is when you're running #1 diesel due to the lack of wax in it that provides lubricity. If you don't run an additive like Power Serve or Standyne you're liable to ruin your injection pump which is a $4 - $6,000 bill.

    Have you tried here?http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/2013-general-discussion/
  • I really don't believe any additive will help with MPG's.

Sure, there are those that will assist with fuel lubricity and cetane levels, but don't expect MPG improvements.
