if you are going to tow heavy or do a lot of mountain driving then diesel is clearly the better choice. diesels produce lots of torque and relatively little heat. heat is what kills engines and most mechanical devices. torgue is what maintains speed. every over-the-road truck is a diesel. construction equipment that runs all day as well as generators are all diesels for the same reason. diesels (especially duramax and fords 2011 superduty) are relatively luxurious diesel engines but they are still designed more for work than pleasure. but if you are only towing a 3500# trailer in Iowa then gas would work fine
