Tom,
Not sure about current pricing, but in the past, the difference between a SW rig, be it a 25 or 35 and a Dually is about 1000-1500 at best. All you need to pay for are the second set of wheels in the back, and rear flairs, along with a few minor odds and end to handle the rims front and rear. It should not be 30%.
Now a Ford SW 350, might be the BEST option for you, in that it has the highest from wht I recall payload for a SW, maybe on par with some duallies, do not quote me on this. The GVWR is about 1500 lb more than a dodge or GM. This might allow you some payload for you, spouse and hw, especially if you go with a reg or ext cab over a crew cab. A crew cab will be some 1500 lbs more than a reg cab, ext cabs are about 750-1000 lbs more than a reg cab assuming everything else is equal in you ordering/locating a truck.
If you can drive some 20-25K miles a year, a diesel will eventually pay for it self in 100-150K miles, maybe 200K with current pricing and fuel costs. You will appreciate the turbo at elevation, ie above 6-7000' or so over the V10. If under this amount driving. the V10 is probably the way to go, the GM 6.0 gas with the 6l95e 6 sp auto, should also do pretty good too. It would not surprise me from some test results, that it could do better pulling the the V10 overall. You will have to wind that one some on the hills vs the V10. The motor will handle it, the question will be, will your ears/mind handle another 500-1000 rpm! The GM would be my first choice if I go gas, not sure about diesel, probably a dodge or GM like I have, but an ext over a crew cab in any motor option.
