Its not just horsepower. I would think gearing and transmission are really huge factors in how a vehicle pulls also.
I do believe Hannibal once mentioned he also had owned almost the same truck as I owned, a middle 90's Dodge Ram Cummins with 3:55 gearing.
There was a prime example of gearing not helping towing. Mine would have been a much better truck with 3:73's or even a 4:10 gearing in lieu of the 3:55's it came with. It got outstanding fuel mileage, but was a poor puller.
