I am a big gas truck supporter and recently got a chance to take a 400 mile ride through the mountains of the western half of VA and Tenn in a diesel truck towing a high profile 5er toyhauler.
All I can say is it that ride really surprised me. After everybody on here talking about how effortlessly a diesel tows you are all full of it. It downshifts just as much as a gas truck and runs up to 3100 rpm on 2-3% interstate grades to hold 65 mph and is louder than my gas truck and sounds just as strained as a gas truck. We got single digit mpg and some stations you had to wait for the single pump and couldn't pay at the pump. It dropped to 50 mph on the 5% grades and this was with a tuner giving it an extra 80 horse or so.
All and all I am fully underwhelmed by the towing performance of a diesel truck. It sounded like it was working no less hard although it did it at 1500 rpm less, it was louder, and still got about 9 mpg.
I am not saying it did poorly, I just think people on here give folks the idea that a diesel truck will climb mt everest at 1600 rpm getting 14 mpg towing a 16k 13ft tall 5er and it just isn't so. It will downshift, slow down, and drink fuel just like a gas truck.
