Downside is the weight. I have a gas engine in part because the diesel version has almost 1,000 lbs less payload capacity and I need all the carrying capacity I can get.
I guess it depends. The Mercedes and Jeep diesels only add about 200lbs to curb weight (mostly due to all the silly US urea injection crap), and payload is identical.
