I went from a 1/2 ton Silverado with a 5.3l to the Duramax last November. I haven't towed anything yet and like I said a few pages back I'm losing 2.5-3 MPG doing the same city/highway driving I was doing with the 5.3l. But at the same time I've got a whole lot more truck than I had before and I knew it was going to be more expensive to run the diesel.
At least until the other half retires I'll probably be that guy who needs a diesel 2% of the time. Again, I knew that ahead of time. For us though, everything just came together where it was time for me to buy a new truck anyway. The 1/2 ton limited us to what TTs we could upgrade to and it was getting to the point where if I didn't do something with the old truck I wasn't going to get anything out of it.
We need a 3/4 ton And I didn't want to do it again in another 5-6 years. So I decided to bite the bullet on the extra cost of the diesel now. We'll still get good use out of the diesel between April and October. We just won't pull in the winter until she stops working.
